The Arecibo Observatory is the world’s second largest radio telescope and is nestled in an enormous mogote (cone karst) sinkhole. In addition to being in the heart of this world famous mogote terrain, you’ll learn about engineering methods for placing the 300-m diameter radio dish in the sinkhole. Cueva (cave) Camuy is part of a huge Rio Camuy complex of limestone caves carved out by the underground segment of the Rio Camuy. Includes field trip, guidebook, snack, lunch, transportation to and from venue.

This presentation will include a brief introduction to karst and the associated geotechnical issues. Vega Alta and Vega Baja are communities in north-central Puerto Rico near the north coast. Parts of their underlying karst aquifers are contaminated and designated Superfund sites for almost 40 years. Remediation has been slow due to complex eogenic karst conditions.
